Well, Smokey is the third horse I've worked with quite a bit and lost to sickness or old age. And it hurts every time. When I got the email from Sarah last week saying Smokey had to be put down, I cried. Not the first time I've cried over an animal. There was Sassy a couple years ago. She gave her all for the kids until her heart just gave out. And years ago before probably any of you volunteers or current instructors were in the program, there was Dusty. A quarter horse palamino. He developed cancer & had to be taken out of the program. They all three will always have a special place in my heart. Dusty was a biter when you weren't expecting it. He initiated me good not long after I began volunteering. The instructor was putting a rider on his back, I was standing in front of him holding the lead line and he grabbed my right thumb. I couldn't slap him right then with a rider being put on him and he wouldn't let go. So, I had to pull my thumb out of his mouth and he had a strong enough grip that it took the skin off both sides of my thumb. So, from then on, he & I came to an understanding and he was an excellent horse. About a year later, a little blind girl named Shannon Paramore came into the program and she rode Dusty and I led him. We did that for a couple years until the program had to leave that barn and moved so far out, I had to drop out and so did she. She's probably 25 years old now and I still think of her. Helping Horse is one of the greatest Blessings God has ever given me. To be able to work with the riders and horses. And I thank Him that he still lets me stay able to do it.
Great Day!

Hey everyone at Helping Horse!

I just wanted to say what a wonderdal day I had there today. The weather was beautiful, I was able to lead Sable (she is wonderful - and that is no slight to my sweetheart Smokey) there were so many volunteers and I had the opportunity to ride Scout. It was a joy to see everyone, the wonderful kids who are working so hard, and the beautiful horses. And, the great morning ending by being able to meet Charlie. He looks very special and I hope he works out.

See you all next week!!
